Greek Toga Costume
Ancient Greek, Roman & Byzantine Costume by Mary G. Houston, This meticulously researched and profusely illustrated book includes 315 drawings based on renderings by artists of the period to achieve utmost accuracy and authenticity. Included are elaborate examples of Aegean costume, Doric and Ionic styles of dress for women, Greek and Roman armor, graceful and intricately arranged Roman togas, the tunica -- a roomy wide-sleeved garment -- and the pallium, a cloak-like garment. Ornate vestments of the Eastern Orthodox Church and Byzantine costumes are carefully described and portrayed as are styles of hairdressing, jewelry, and other decorative elements. Instructions and flat patterns showing the cut of sample garments make it easy for costume designers to reproduce period apparel. An excellent reference for the history classroom, this volume will be invaluable to costume historians and art students interested in the development of representative art.
Toga party - A popular fad on American college campuses in the 1960s, a toga party is a particular kind of costume party at which everyone wears a toga, or a semblance thereof, normally made from a bedsheet. The toga party concept originated within the fraternity, or "Greek" campus culture, hence the costume. Chiton (costume) - A chiton was a piece of clothing in the Ancient Greek world. It was made of a single sheet of light drape and worn directly over the body. Roman Emperor (Dominate) - The accession to the purple on November 20, 284, of Diocletian, the lower-class, Greek-speaking Dalmatian commander of Carus's and Numerian's household cavalry (protectores domestici), marked a major departure from traditional Roman constitutional theory regarding the Emperor, who was nominally first among equals; Diocletian introduced Oriental despotism into the Imperial dignity. Whereas before Emperors had worn only a purple toga (toga purpura) and greeted with deference, Diocletian wore jewelled robes and shoes, and required those who greeted him to kneel and kiss the hem of his robe (adoratio). Ancient Greek - Ancient Greek refers to the stage in the history of the Greek language corresponding to Classical Antiquity, which normally applies to two periods of Greek history: Archaic and Classical Greece. The Ancient era of Greek history normally includes also the Hellenistic (post-Classic) age; however, that period formally composes its own stage in the Greek Language known as Hellenistic Greek.
